Five Areas To Visit In Seoul

With nearly 10 million residents, the vast urban expanse of Seoul can leave visitors feeling disoriented due to the absence of a centralized hub. The immensity of the city can often make visitors feel perplexed and bewildered, unsure of where to start exploring. The sheer scale and intricacy of the city can be overwhelming to navigate. Nevertheless, for the intrepid adventurer, there is a sense of thrill in the unfamiliar. Uncovering the hidden treasures tucked away in the labyrinthine alleyways, the street food stalls, and the local hangouts can be an adventure in its own right. The city provides a chance to lose oneself and rediscover one's self all at once.

Here are five must-visit areas of Seoul that you cannot afford to miss during your exploration of the South Korean capital.

1. Jongno

If you're eager to immerse yourself in Seoul's rich history, the Jongno area is a perfect starting point. It boasts an impressive array of historical landmarks, such as the breathtaking Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and the National Museum of Korea. But Jongno is more than just a time capsule - as you wander its streets, you'll discover a captivating fusion of old and new. Marvel at ancient temples and palaces that coexist with sleek skyscrapers, and explore traditional markets that coexist with trendy boutiques and cafes.

Indeed, Jongno is a must-visit destination for anyone keen to delve into Seoul's cultural heritage. The area provides a glimpse into the city's storied past and offers the chance to experience the essence of traditional Korean life. However, while Jongno may be a tourist hotspot, it's not the most conducive place to find accommodation. Although it boasts plenty of sights, it lacks the lively street life found in other parts of the city.

2. Myeongdong

Myeongdong is the area where I would recommend looking for accommodation, and where I stayed during my visit. It is the modern center of the city and arguably the most popular area for tourists. It is famous for excellent shopping, especially for cosmetics, skincare products, and fashion, but you can find pretty much anything there.

A landmark in the area is the Myeongdong Cathedral, a Gothic-style church that dates back to the late 19th century. The streets in Myeongdong are always full of life, both during the day and especially during the evening. This was my favorite part of Seoul!

3. Hongdae

Hongdae is a neighborhood located in the Mapo district. It is named after Hongik University, a prestigious art school located in the area. Hongdae is known for its youthful atmosphere, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike.

One of the main attractions of Hongdae is its nightlife. The area is home to many bars, clubs, and live music venues, making it a popular spot for young people to gather and socialize. The streets are often filled with street performers and artists, adding to the lively and creative atmosphere of the neighborhood.

I found this area to be fascinating, but I wouldn't choose to live here since the highlights are concentrated in just a few streets, and the journey to other essential parts of Seoul can be a bit lengthy from here.

4. Gangnam

Gangnam is a district located in the southern part of Seoul. It is known for its high-end shopping, fashion, and entertainment, as well as its vibrant nightlife. The name "Gangnam" translates to "south of the river," and the district is located south of the Han River that runs through Seoul (the only such district on this list).

One of the main attractions of Gangnam is its shopping scene. The area is home to numerous luxury department stores and designer boutiques, including the famous COEX Mall, which is one of the largest underground shopping centers in Asia. Gangnam is also known for its high-end dining and entertainment options, with many upscale restaurants, bars, and clubs located in the area.

Gangnam is also famous for the song "Gangnam Style" by South Korean musician Psy, which became a global phenomenon in 2012. The song and its accompanying music video satirize the lavish lifestyle and materialism associated with the Gangnam district.

5. Itaewon

Itaewon is in the Yongsan district and it is known for its diverse culture and international community, making it a popular destination for expats and tourists.

Itaewon's lively nightlife is one of its primary draws. The area is home to numerous bars, clubs, and live music venues, offering a diverse range of entertainment options. It is also known for its international cuisine, with a wide variety of restaurants serving food from all around the world.

Itaewon is also known for its history. During the Korean War, Itaewon was used as a military base for the US Army, and the area still has a strong American influence today. It is home to the famous Itaewon Gwangjang Market, which has been in operation since the 1960s and is known for its selection of traditional Korean foods and goods.
