How Many Days Do You Need In Helsinki?

Helsinki is situated at the very periphery of Europe. It's the Northernmost Capital of the European Union, and actually even the Northernmost metropolitan area with over one million inhabitants in the World. If we ignore the idea some of us have, myself included, that we want to visit as many countries as possible and sometimes go out of our way just to achieve that; Is it worth going to Helsinki? And how many days do you need to explore the city?

Suomenlinna

Helsinki is not a huge city. To be honest, you can do sightseeing in the city and be done with it in one day. The main sights are few and close together with one exception.

The Fortress of Suomenlinna is one of the most important sights of Helsinki, and it's located on an island 15 minutes by boat from the city. The Fortress and island are quite spread apart so it does take some time to explore it, even if you only to the basics. Suomenlinna has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991 and was built by Sweden in 1748. Originally it was named Sveaborg (Castle of Sweden) which was renamed to Suomenlinna (Castle of Finland) in 1918, in connection to Finnish Independence from Russia who conquered Finland from Sweden in 1809.

If you want to see Suomenlinna you should probably add one more day to your stay. I had one night, with an early flight in and a late flight out, giving me two days to explore, and that was almost too much time. But coming and leaving on the same day might be too stressful if you want to feel that you are fully done with Helsinki. You certainly do not need more time than this though.

Aleksanterinkatu (Alexander Street)

Regarding the second question if Helsinki is worth visiting it's up to priorities. It's not a must-see city. It's not a city with too much going on. The architecture can be beautiful in certain parts, especially near the district Kaartinkaupunki, but large parts of the city are rather bland. There's no designated Old Town as there is in, for example, nearby Stockholm or Tallinn.

The sights you need to see are Helsinki Cathedral and Uspenski Cathedral, then take a stroll through Esplanadi and walk along the main street Aleksanterinkatu (Alexander Street). After that, you've seen most of it. If you've seen most of Europe already, it can be a decent weekend trip. It's also the entryway into Finland. For travelers looking for nature and a more rural vacation, Finland is a very good option. As a city, Helsinki is not the most interesting though.

It could be an option to combine a trip to Helsinki with Tallinn. The connections between the two are strong and it's easy to travel between them. Two cities with a lot of shared culture and history, but with very different feeling. Tallinn has a preserved medieval old town, while Helsinki has a much more modern feeling.
