Founded as Fort Christina in the short-lived colony of New Sweden there's lots of history tracing back to Sweden's only colony in the United States in Wilmington. There are several sites in the eastern part of the city remaining from this period while Downtown has a more typical American feeling. Don't forget to take a walk down the Riverwalk along Christina River if the weather allows for it. Several restaurants and museums are located along that path.

I wanted to visit Wilmington for the sights connected to New Sweden. Unfortunately, most of them were closed on the day I was visiting, and the ship "Kalmar Nyckel" was away on a tour up north (according to the people I spoke to at Fort Christina Park. Apart from the New Sweden-related sights, there isn't much to see in Wilmington. The main street is interesting to walk once, but it only takes about 15 minutes.
Do I Recommend You To Visit?
Not really. Wilmington is not a big tourist destination. If you are driving by and have two or three hours to spare then it could be a decent stop just to check off another state.
Will I Come Back Again?
No, probably not.
Weather During My Stay:
Sunny and hot!
Best:
The Riverwalk is very pretty and pleasant on a sunny day.
Not As Good:
This is a rather small city, and one with a crime and homeless problem. It didn't feel entirely safe in some areas of the city.

Market Street is the main street through downtown Wilmington.
The Grand Opera House of Wilmington, on Market Street, has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972 and is cited as one of the finest remaining examples of 19th-century cast iron architecture in America.
7th Street West of Downtown, near Compton Village. It's not the prettiest part of town, but it's close to where you will find most of the sights connected to New Sweden.
